Member Types

Medical Student Member (MSM) – MPS membership for medical students helps them learn more about psychiatry and connect to potential mentors. This category is free of charge and includes access to MPS communications, interest groups, committees, and listserv. MPS membership is an invaluable opportunity for students looking to enter psychiatry. Current enrollment in a Maryland school of medicine is required. Email mps@mdpsych.org to request more information or details on how to apply.

Resident Fellow Member (RFM) – Physicians who have been accepted into a psychiatric residency training program that is approved by the ACGME, RCPS(C), or AOA and remain enrolled therein. Residents enrolled in a one- year primary care training program to be followed by an approved psychiatric residency are eligible.  RFMs have free access to over 40 online courses that supplement what they are learning in the patient care setting and help them prepare for the business side of medicine.  Find the APA Learning Center and other RFM benefits at www.psychiatry.org/residents.

General Member, 1st Year Post Completion (GM1) – Physicians who have completed an acceptable program of training in psychiatry, and hold either a valid license to practice medicine or hold an academic, research, or governmental position that does not require licensure and are within their first year post-residency. These members pay MPS dues at the member-in-training rate.

General Member, 2nd Year Post Completion (GM2) – Physicians who have completed an acceptable program of training in psychiatry, and hold either a valid license to practice medicine or hold an academic, research, or governmental position that does not require licensure and are within their second year post-residency. These members pay MPS dues at ½ the standard general member rate.

General Member, 3rd Year Post Completion (GM3) – Physicians who have completed an acceptable program of training in psychiatry, and hold either a valid license to practice medicine or hold an academic, research, or governmental position that does not require licensure and are within their third year post-residency. These members pay MPS dues at 3/4 the standard general member rate.

General Members (GM) – Physicians beyond three years post-residency who have completed an acceptable program of training in psychiatry, and hold either a valid license to practice medicine or hold an academic, research, or governmental position that does not require licensure.

Fellow (FE) – Those eligible for Fellow must be a General Member or Life Member, and must have served in a psychiatric leadership position on a national, district branch or international psychiatric association for over five years.  Alternatively, the member must be certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the American Osteopathic Association.

Distinguished Fellow (DF) – Distinguished Fellows are nominated first by the MPS before being recommended for approval by the APA Membership Committee and voted upon by the Board of Trustees. Candidates for this category have to meet more comprehensive criteria, including significant achievement in several areas of psychiatry.

Distinguished Life Fellow (DLF) – Member who has met all criteria to become a Distinguished Fellow and holds Life Status . Membership can be classified as half time practice or more, less than half time practice or not currently practice. MPS dues are based on the member’s current level of professional activity.

Life Fellow (LF) – Member who has met all criteria to become a Fellow and holds Life Status. Membership can be classified as half time practice or more, less than half time practice or not currently practice. MPS dues are based on the member’s current level of professional activity.

Life Member (LM) – Member who has met all criteria to become a General Member and holds Life Status. Membership can be classified as half time practice or more, less than half time practice or not currently practice. MPS dues are based on the member’s current level of professional activity.

Starting in 2022, Life Status is a designation that can be achieved by either (i) being a member for 30 or more years; or (ii) paying lump sum dues. Everyone who had entered the Rule of 95 as of 2021 continues through automatically to achieve Lifetime Membership status.

Semi-Retired Member Category –A Semi-Retired member is a GM, FE or DF who is near retirement age and works less than 15 hours per week in any administrative or clinical role or roles (i.e. across multiple settings).  MPS dues are reduced to one-half of full member dues.

Retired Member Category – A Retired member is a GM, FE or DF who has reached retirement age and is fully retired from all administrative or clinical responsibilities.  MPS dues are reduced to one-third of full member dues.

Affiliate Member – Affiliate Membership is open to any active voting member in good standing of another District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association. Affiliate Members receive free subscriptions to our publications, The Maryland Psychiatrist, and MPS News, as well as a copy of the annual MPS Membership Directory. Affiliate Membership also includes discounts on MPS scientific programs with CME credits required for medical license renewals, as well as the option to receive patient referrals. Affiliate Members cannot vote in MPS elections or hold MPS office.  Interested?
