Confidentiality of Substance Use Records
For the first time in 30 years, the Department of Health and Human Services updated its regulations for 42 CFR Part 2 (Part 2) Confidentiality of Substance Use Disorder Patient Records. The updated regulations, which went into effect on March 21, 2017 allow for better information sharing while balancing the privacy rights for people seeking treatment for substance use issues. The APA website has information about the rule, including a summary and comparison of the current and new rules, on its website.
