Senate Leadership Announcements
At the end of October, Senate President Bill Ferguson announced several committee and leadership changes for the 2027 Session. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, so full committee assignments will not be completed until after the election results are known. We will share that information once it is made known.
- Senator Antonio Hayes (Baltimore City) has been appointed Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, with Senator Katie Fry Hester (Howard and Montgomery Counties) serving as Vice Chair.
- Senator Guy Guzzone (Howard County) will continue to serve as Chair of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee. Senator Cory McCray (Baltimore City) has been appointed Vice Chair.
- Senator Dawn Gile (Anne Arundel County) will transition from the Senate Finance Committee to serve as Chair of the Senate Education, Energy, and the Environment Committee. Senator Benjamin Brooks (Baltimore County) has been appointed Vice Chair.
- Senator Will Smith (Montgomery County) will continue to serve as Chair of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, with Senator Jeff Waldstreicher (Montgomery County) as Vice Chair.
- Senator Alonzo Washington (Prince George’s County) has been appointed Chair of the Senate Executive Nominations Committee.
- Senator Brian Feldman (Montgomery County) will transition from his role as Chair of the Senate Education, Energy, and the Environment Committee to become Senate Majority Leader and Chief of Policy. In this role, he will not serve directly on one of the four standing policy committees but will instead serve as an ex officio member of each committee, attending hearings as needed and voting in the event of a tie. Senator Feldman will also chair the newly established Senate Rules and Operations Committee, which is expected to function similarly to the Senate Rules Committee but with broader authority over late-filed bills and original jurisdiction over select multi-jurisdictional issues and state government organization and procedures, including in the judicial branch. The committee’s Vice Chair will be Senate President Pro Tem Malcolm Augustine (Prince George’s County).
- Senator Karen Lewis Young (Frederick County) has been appointed Chair of the Health and Human Services Subcommittee of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee.
- Senator Craig Zucker (Montgomery County) will continue to serve as Chair of the Capital Budget Subcommittee of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee.
- Senator Mary Washington (Baltimore City and Baltimore County) has been appointed Senate Majority Whip.
