Speaker Biographies: 

Desmond Kaplan, MD: Dr Desmond Kaplan is a child adolescent and adult psychiatrist now in private practice as well as medical director of LiveBenevolent, an inner city non-profit behavioral health program. Dr Kaplan is South African born, went to medical school in Cape Town and trained in child adolescent and adult psychiatry in Israel. In 1996 he came to Kennedy Krieger and Johns Hopkins to do a clinical and research post doc and then remained on faculty for another 3 years. Following this he was recruited by Sheppard Pratt to help found the Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry program where he was the service chief for a decade. He also directed the Telepsych Program at Sheppard Pratt for 7 years. Dr. Kaplan has presented on Autism in Maryland and overseas in Israel and South Africa. He has also published on autism and other developmental disorders.

Rajneesh Mahajan, MD: Dr. Mahajan is a faculty pediatric psychiatrist at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) at Kennedy Krieger Institute.  He is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is board certified by ABPN in child and adolescent, and adult psychiatry. Dr. Mahajan attended medical school at Maulana Azad Medical College (University of Delhi), graduating in 1992 and had some psychiatry residency training in India. He completed  his general psychiatry training at University of Maryland, in Baltimore, Maryland in 1999 and his child and adolescent psychiatry training at the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt Hospital in 2001. After working in a variety of clinical outpatient  and inpatient settings, he joined Kennedy Krieger Institute in January 2007 as a faculty psychiatrist. At KKI, Dr. Mahajan has been providing clinical care primarily at CARD since 2008. He has also worked in KKI’s outpatient psychiatry clinic and Kennedy Krieger Schools. For 2 years, Dr. Mahajan worked at Sheppard Pratt hospital on the Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry  inpatient unit, before his return to KKI. He has been involved in teaching/supervision of Johns Hopkins child and adolescent psychiatry residents at CARD, and neurodevelopmental pediatrics and other pediatric trainees and Johns Hopkins medical students in the TEND (Teaching Excellence in Neurodevelopmental Disorders) clinic . Dr. Mahajan has published research papers in autism, and was involved in framing of practice pathways for evaluation and treatment of ADHD, anxiety and irritability and problem behavior in autistic individuals through Autism Speaks- Autism Treatment Network.

Improve skills in identification of neurodevelopmental, language and social emotional delays

Promote optimal development through developmental screening and surveillance.

Gain a greater understanding of strategies/medications that can help with common challenges associated with autism.
