SUMMARY:Controversies in Psychiatric Diagnosis & Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Roanoke for the Psychiatric Society of Virginia’s 2016 Fall Meeting!\nOn behalf of the PSV\, I would like to welcome you to our exciting and thought-provoking program this fall that will delve into various controversial topics in psychiatry. Following a delicious\, full breakfast Saturday morning\, Dr. Jim Reinhard\, former Commissioner of Mental Health\, will provide us with an intriguing presentation on what psychiatrists should ask their patients about guns and whether they should ask at all. Psychologist Thomas Collura will then describe current evidence for neurofeedback as a treatment for a variety of psychiatric disorders\, including depression\, anxiety\, ADD/ADHD and autism spectrum disorders\, and for neurological diagnoses such as migraines and other headaches. A discussion of the truly unique subject of neurotheology\, the effects of religion and other contemplative practices on the brain\, will be provided by one of our past PSV presidents\, Dr. Rizwan Ali. Another recent past president of PSV\, Dr. Brian Wood\, will enlighten us about the latest controversies in the psychopharmacological treatment of the geriatric population. \nAfter a hearty lunch and an informative business meeting\, Dr. Tracey Criss will provide us with an update on ECT\, followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Bush Kavuru\, Dr. Charles Swanson and Dr. Justin White. Dr. Dan Morhaim will discuss a positive approach to end of life care\, including the importance of advance directives. And to really heat up the debate\, our Fall Meeting lineup will finish with a bang: a presentation of the pros\, discussed by Dr. Dan Morhaim\, and cons\, discussed by Dr. Jitendra Desai\, of medical cannabis. A lively Q&A will follow before we all head home feeling sufficiently updated and edified. \nSo\, please join us on October 7 and 8\, at the historic Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center\, for what promises to be an illuminating and stimulating educational program. SUMMARY:March for Dignity and Change in Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:The moment has come to reframe mental health as a basic right that must be realized in the context of human dignity. The Destination Dignity March\, a collective effort of thousands affected by mental health conditions\, is a crucial step in this direction for a healthier America. \nOn any given day\, more than 60 million Americans\, up to 1 in 5\, are living with mental health and substance use conditions. Although these issues can be disabling\, with the right support and services people go on to live meaningful lives. As parents\, employees\, leaders\, families and professionals these people contribute to their communities at every level. \nDespite this\, Americans with mental health conditions remain the only group of people who it is considered acceptable to ridicule\, dismiss and discriminate against.  A legacy of prejudice and serious injustices in how our nation addresses mental health remain barriers to recovery\, fostering despair\, isolation\, and the death by suicide of over 40\,000 Americans annually. Especially for people with the greatest needs\, stigma and discrimination continue to work against the hope\, respect and community support that are essential to mental health. \nThis must change! It is time to step out of the collective closet and stand against stigma that has kept people silent\, ill and alone. It is time for all those affected by mental health conditions to claim dignity\, and to show strength and solidarity for change across America. \nTogether with our supporters \nWE DEMAND DIGNITY. WE DEMAND CHANGE. \nIn a unified voice with supporters\, providers\, family and friends\, people living with mental health conditions will call for an end to unconscionable levels of unemployment\, incarceration\, homelessness and disability. An end to underfunding of services\, harsh practices and fail-first systems in which involuntary status is requirement for care. An end to negative portrayals and scapegoating. An end to a society in which people with mental health conditions die up to twenty-five years before the rest of the population.
