They are challenging to diagnose even for experienced health care professionals. Delays in diagnosis and treatment lead to poor outcomes for patients as they suffer from effects on mental and physical health. About 30% of people report depression as one of their symptoms when they see their doctor. But fewer than 10% actually have severe depression. Nearly 4% of the U.S. population have a bipolar disorder. He is a thought leader in the areas of biological psychiatry\, diagnosis and the integration of somatic and psychological therapies. He is the principal investigator for multiple studies on the development of novel therapies for mood\, anxiety and psychotic disorders. Dr. Aaronson currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is also the Associate Medical Director and Director of Clinical Research at The Retreat at Sheppard Pratt. \nLauren Osborne\, M.D. – Dr. Osborne is the Assistant Director at Johns Hopkins Women’s Mood Disorders Center. She graduated from Weill Cornell Medical College and received her training at Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute. She completed both clinical and research fellowships in women’s mental health\, and is an expert on the diagnosis and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders during pregnancy\, the postpartum\, the premenstrual period\, and perimenopause. \nRobert Post\, M.D. – Dr. Post founded the International Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network (now the Bipolar Collaborative Network). Throughout his career\, including 35 years at the NIMH\, and 20 of those as Chief of the Biological Psychiatry Branch\, Dr. Post has focused on bettering the understanding and treatment of refractory unipolar and bipolar illness. Currently\, he is in private practice and attempting to address childhood-onset bipolar illness. \nDavid Pickar\, M.D. – Dr. Pickar is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He served in the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) for over 20 years where he was the Chief of the Experimental Therapeutics Branch dedicated to studying schizophrenia and psychosis. Dr. Pickar is Founder and President of Gabriel Sciences\, a company whose mission is advancing the development of a novel treatment for schizophrenia. He practices psychiatry in Chevy Chase\, Maryland. \n  \nGoals & Objectives: \nAt the conclusion of the program\, the participant should be able to: \n\nKnow the literature on more childhood onset bipolar disorder in the US and understand the vulnerabilities and risk factor for it\nBecome aware of the progressive nature of bipolar disorder driven by epigenetic mechanisms.\nDefine risks of untreated psychiatric illness during and after pregnancy\nDefine risks and benefits of psychiatric medication during and after pregnancy\nIdentify at least two treatment alternatives for mood and anxiety disorders during and after pregnancy.\nRecognize variants in the presentation of depression and when symptoms suggest treatment is needed for bipolar disorder\nCreate the treatment paradigm for the longterm management of difficult to treat depression using neurostimulation.\nDescribe the developments seen with the introduction of new second generation antipsychotics\n\n  \nAccreditation/Designation Statements \nThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of American Psychiatric Association (APA) and Maryland Psychiatric Society (MPS). In 2017\, legislation was filed (for the third year) in the Maryland General Assembly that would allow doctors to legally prescribe a lethal dose of medicine at the request of a patient who has been deemed mentally competent and who has received a terminal diagnosis. These bills — HB 370 and SB 354 — were both ultimately withdrawn from consideration. In addition to his responsibilities as director\, he is a professor at Georgetown University Medical School\, co-directs medical student education in ethics\, bioethics education for resident physicians\, and directs the ethics consultation service for MedSTAR Georgetown University Hospital. He is also a Senior Clinical Scholar at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. Dr. Donovan has been chair of the bioethics section of the American Academy of Pediatrics and its Committee on Bioethics. Dr. Donovan was awarded the Humanism in Medicine award in 2005 from the Gold Foundation\, which recognizes physicians who have successfully integrated humanism into the delivery of care to patients and families. \n  \nAnnette Hanson M.D. is a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Maryland with a dual appointment at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. She directs the University of Maryland forensic psychiatry fellowship program\, and is co-chair of the Maryland Psychiatric Society’s legislative committee. \n  \nMark Komrad M.D. is the Ethicist-in-Residence for the Sheppard Pratt Health Systems\, where he chaired the Ethics Committee for over 20 years. He is a member of the APA Assembly and previously served 6 years on the APA Ethics Committee. He lectures widely through the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe to address ethical concerns. \n  \nMichael L. Levin\, M.D.\, FACP\, FIDSA specializes in internal medicine\, infectious disease and HIV/AIDS. He is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and at University of Maryland Medical Institutions (Clinical). Dr. Levin is a well renowned speaker on the topics of HIV/AIDS and has served as an infectious disease consultant to many organizations throughout Maryland. \n  \nElizabeth Morrison\, M.D.\, DLFAPA has been in private practice in Chevy Chase\, MD for 31 years. Previously\, she was a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps\, serving at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.  She completed her A.B. in history from Oberlin College\, her M.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine\, and her medical internship and psychiatric residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. \n  \nAnthony Riley\, M.D. has been Medical Director of Gilchrist Hospice Care since its inception in 1994 and also serves as Medical Director for Gilchrist Greater Living\, a group of physicians who serve frail and elderly patients across the health care continuum – from Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) to nursing homes and assisted living facilities to palliative care\, and finally\, to hospice. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine\, Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Geriatrics and a certified Medical Director. \n  \nRobert Roca\, M.D. MPH MBA  (Moderator) has been Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of the Sheppard Pratt Health System since 2000.  Prior to moving to Sheppard Pratt in 1993\, he was director of consultation and geriatric psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center\, where he also chaired the ethics committee.   He is a past president of the MPS and of the Baltimore County Medical Association. He is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. \n  \nMatt Whitaker is a former clinician with extensive experience in health policy and advocacy. He most recently served as Compassion & Choices Oregon State Director before stepping into his new role as a Multi-State Implementation Manager. Matt has spoken at numerous conferences on bioethics and person-centered care across the country and testified as an expert resource on end of life choice to numerous legislative committees. Matt is a board-certified music therapist with clinical experience in long term acute care and geriatrics and a passion for improving end-of-life care through patient empowerment and education. \n  \nObjectives: \n\n Compare the benefits and burdens to society posed by laws permitting Assisted Suicide\n Recognize the challenge to the profession by participating in PAS\n Assess the inadequacy of protections included in such laws\, due directly to the justification for their passage\n Review the information on the past 20 years of experience in Oregon with medical aid in dying and the relevant information about how the practice has developed.\n\n  \nAccreditation/Designation: \nThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of MedChi\, The Maryland State Medical Society\, and the Maryland Psychiatric Society. DESCRIPTION:In Committed: The Battle over Involuntary Psychiatric Care\, psychiatrists Dinah Miller and Annette Hanson offer a thought-provoking and engaging account of the controversy surrounding involuntary psychiatric care in the United States. They bring the issue to life with first-hand accounts from patients\, clinicians\, advocates\, and opponents. Looking at practices such as seclusion and restraint\, involuntary medication\, and involuntary electroconvulsive therapy—all within the context of civil rights—Miller and Hanson illuminate the personal consequences of these controversial practices through voices of people who have been helped by the treatment they had as well as those who have been traumatized by it. \nThe authors explore the question of whether involuntary treatment has a role in preventing violence\, suicide\, and mass murder. They delve into the controversial use of court-ordered outpatient treatment at its best and at its worst. Finally\, they examine innovative solutions—mental health court\, crisis intervention training\, and pretrial diversion—that are intended to expand access to care while diverting people who have serious mental illness out of the cycle of repeated hospitalization and incarceration. They also assess what psychiatry knows about the prediction of violence and the limitations of laws designed to protect the public. \nDinah Miller\, MD\, is an instructor in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Annette Hanson\, MD\, is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
