In the United States alone there are one million suicide attempts and over 40\,000 deaths by suicide every year. Our United States Military is devastatingly impacted with 22 Veterans dying everyday by suicide\, and that is an understatement. \nResearch has shown that for every one suicide death\, over 115 people are directly\, and secondarily effected and the financial cost of suicide in the US is estimated to be over 40 billion dollars annually. Suicide is global public health crisis that is not receiving the attention it deserves and therefore millions continue to die\, and the ripple effects of these deaths continue to devastate parents\, children\, families\, friends and communities. \n“Suicide: The Ripple Effect” is a feature length documentary film and MOVEMENT\, focusing on the devastating effects of suicide and the tremendous positive ripple effects of advocacy\, inspiration and hope that are helping millions heal & stay alive. \nThe film highlights the journey of Kevin Hines\, who at age 19\, attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. \nThe film chronicles Kevin’s personal journey and the ripple effect it has on those who have been impacted by his suicide attempt and his life’s work since.  In addition\, the film highlights the stories of individuals and families who are utilizing their personal tragedy to bring hope and healing to others. \nThis film will shine light on the reality of this ongoing crisis and highlight effective efforts that are helping people stay well and alive. This film is uniting and igniting change that will have a tremendous positive impact on reducing the number of suicides and suicide attempts around the world. It is not just a film; it is a movement. \n  \nAbout the Speaker:  Janel Cubbage is the Director of Suicide Prevention at the Behavioral Health Administration where she works with various stakeholders to increase awareness of suicide and improve preparedness to identify individuals at-risk\, intervene\, and provide support to promote healing and improved quality of life. Janel began her career in the juvenile justice field working with adjudicated youth and later became involved in suicide prevention through her work as a program manager for the Army National Guard. In addition to her work in public health\, Janel is also a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor and continues to work with a diverse group of clients\, previously providing therapy services to individuals incarcerated at Carroll County Detention Center and now seeing clients at a private practice in Columbia. Through her clinical work\, Janel specializes in depression\, trauma\, and suicidal ideation in underserved populations including the African American and military community. Neubauer\, MD\, is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is a member of the Sleep Research Society. He has written numerous journal articles and book chapters on sleep related topics. Dr. Neubauer was appointed by the American Psychiatric Association as liaison to the National Sleep Foundation Sleep Time Recommendations project. He currently serves on the National Sleep Foundation Board of Directors. \nGeorge Kolodner\, MD\, is an addiction psychiatrist who specializes in the outpatient treatment of substance use disorders. After leaving the Navy in 1973\, he designed and implemented the first intensive outpatient addiction treatment program in the country – Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers – where he continues to serve as the medical director. \nSunil Khushalani\, MD\, is an addiction psychiatrist who specializes in treating patients who suffer from co-occurring psychiatric and addiction issues. Dr. Khushalani serves as the service chief of the Co-Occurring Disorders unit and the Adult Day Hospital at  Sheppard Pratt. The co-occurring disorders program offers an integrated approach that treats both the addiction and mental health issues simultaneously. \nGloria Reeves\, MD\, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist at The University of Maryland. Dr. Reeves partnered with pharmacists\, child mental health experts\, and child-serving state agency leadership to help develop an antipsychotic medication prior authorization program for publicly-insured youth <18 years old.  She currently serves as Medical Director of this program\, and also serves as Medical Director of the Strive for Wellness program. \nFrancis Mondimore\, M.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins and is the director of the Mood Disorders Clinic at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Here\, in conjunction with the National Network of Depression Centers\, the clinical and research team is investigating the longitudinal course of serious depression and bipolar disorder in order to determine what constitute “best practices” for the care of individuals with these illnesses. \n  \nGOALS/OBJECTIVES: \nAt the end of this educational activity\, the learner will be able to: \n\nReview key elements in evaluating insomnia\nDiscuss broad approaches to treating insomnia\nList four major categories of substances people take to promote sleep\nDescribe primary pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of FDA-approved insomnia medications\nIncrease familiarity with the medical benefits and potential dangers of cannabis\nImprove ability to use medications in the treatment of opioid use disorders\nImprove ability to use medications in the treatment of alcohol use disorder\nBecome familiar with using pharmacogenomic testing to aid in selecting psychiatric medications\nReview current FDA approved indications for pediatric antipsychotic treatment and risk-to-benefit considerations in treatment with these medications in young patients\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Don’t Miss the Free 10th Anniversary of the Parity Law Celebration and Seminar \nThe landmark 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act reaches a major milestone in October. During the decade since the passage of this federal non-discrimination law\, we also witnessed the enactment of the Affordable Care Act\, which expanded but also complicated parity enforcement. A recent poll of Maryland providers showed that there is still a need for education about what the law requires. \nThe MPS Payer Relations Committee will host a gathering on October 16 so members can get the facts in person\, ask questions and even get help with current treatment coverage issues. Henry Harbin\, M.D. will be the featured speaker with Steve Daviss\, M.D. as discussant. This event will be held at the MPS office in Baltimore. The evening is planned as follows: \n7 – 7:30 PM Reception – cheers to those who worked for passage and enforcement! Enjoy wine and cheese and network with colleagues. \n7:30 – 8 PM Presentation explaining parity\, which generally prevents health plans and health insurance issuers that provide mental health or substance use disorder benefits from imposing less favorable benefit limitations on those benefits than on medical/surgical benefits. The focus will be on how to identify common violations\, with examples. \n8 – 8:15 PM Dessert \n8:15 – 9 PM Responses to questions submitted in advance\, open Q&A session and assistance with specific cases \nAttendees will leave armed with take-aways that can help address parity violations they may see in their practices. \nThe materials will also be posted on the MPS website following the event. \nAttendees are encouraged to send questions they want to be addressed before the event so that responses and resources will be readily available. Please submit by email no later than Friday October 12. There will also be time for open Q&A. \nParking may be available in the MPS office building ($10 cash only). Enter via the alley behind the building from Chase Street. There is an open lot at 1012 St. Paul Street and a garage in the Belvedere\, 1017 N.
