SUMMARY:MPS Legislative Committee 2020 Session Kickoff Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The MPS Legislative Committee (LAC) is always looking for new members! This Committee pursues the interests of the membership in all mental health matters\, initiating and responding to proposed state  legislation as well as proposed regulations affecting psychiatry.   Committee members also liaison with our lobbyist\, other MPS committees\, MedChi\, and other patient and professional advocacy groups is integral to this work\, much of which occurs during the legislative session from early January to early April each year. Members critique bills and can testify in Annapolis on bills the committee feels are most important. The LAC will hold a kickoff meeting for the 2020 session on November 20th at 7:00PM in the MPS office. He has particularly been involved with the development of new strategies to alleviate the symptoms in treatment resistant mood disorders\, and has published numerous articles  on pivotal studies in the use of devices—Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) in the treatment of severe refractory mood disorders. \nGeoff Grammer\, MD – is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University. He serves as Greenbrook TMS NeuroHealth’s Chief Medical Officer\, the largest TMS provider in the United States with over 80 centers.  Dr. Grammer created one of the very first TMS Therapy centers in the United States and is valued as a leading practitioner of TMS Therapy by his colleagues. \nMatt Johnson\, Ph.D. – is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins Hospital. His research interests include human behavior change\, especially in the context of addiction recovery. His expertise is in addiction medicine\, drug abuse research and drug dependence \nAdam Kaplin\, MD\, PhD – is an Assistant Professor of Neurology & Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is the Chief Psychiatric Consultant for the Johns Hopkins MS Center and his areas of expertise include Neuropsychiatry\, Mental Health Information Technology and Psychoneuroimmunology. \nLiz Prince\, DO – is an Instructor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University. Following medical school at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City\, Dr. Prince completed her internship and residency in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins. She went on to a fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry at University of Maryland Medical Center before returning to join the faculty at Johns Hopkins. \nLindsay Standeven\, MD – is in her last year of fellowship training in Reproductive Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Johns Hopkins. SUMMARY:Free Half & Half MAT Buprenorphine Waiver Training
DESCRIPTION:7:30 am – 8 am: Registration\n8 am – 12:15 pm: Training\n12:15 pm – 12:45 pm: Community behavioral health partners networking & lunch\n  \nHalf-and-Half Course\nThe PCSS Half-and-Half Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) waiver training course provides an overview of the FDA-approved medication buprenorphine prescribed for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). The course meets the required 8-hour training to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of OUD. The course trainer will conduct an overview of prevention\, identification\, and treatment of substance use disorders emphasizing OUD. \nThe buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training is offered in a ‘half- and-half’ format – 4 hours of in-person training followed up by 4 hours of online training through PCSS-MAT. Kolodner Memorial Lecture. \nThis memorial lecture and dinner will be presented in MedChi’s historic Osler Hall on October 24th from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. \nThis year guest lecturer\, Jay H. Sanders\, M.D.\, FACP\, FACAAI\, FATA\, will present “Where We Are and Where We Need To Be.” The presentation will briefly explore both the history of telemedicine\, AI and sensors and provide an overview of their present and future applications and consequences relative to the role and impact on the present day understanding of how and where the majority of healthcare will be provided and by whom. A hypothetical\, but realistic view of tomorrow’s healthcare delivery system and our role in it will be explored. \nDr. Sanders\, known to many as the “Father of Telemedicine”\, was responsible for developing the first State-wide telemedicine system\, the first Correctional telemedicine program\, the first Tele-homecare technology\, called “The Electronic House Call”\, and the first Telemedicine kiosk. His consulting activities have included NASA\, DOD\, HHS\, the VA\, the FCC\, State Governments\, the Southern Governors Association\, the MIT Media Lab\, WHO\, academic institutions\, investment firms\, Fortune 500 companies\, and International Governments. SUMMARY:Free PCSS Half & Half MAT Buprenorphine Waiver Training
DESCRIPTION:Half-and-Half Course\nThe PCSS Half-and-Half Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) waiver training course provides an overview of the FDA-approved medication buprenorphine prescribed for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). The course meets the required 8-hour training to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of OUD. The course trainer will conduct an overview of prevention\, identification\, and treatment of substance use disorders emphasizing OUD. \nThe buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training is offered in a ‘half- and-half’ format – 4 hours of in-person training followed up by 4 hours of online training through PCSS-MAT. DESCRIPTION:The Center for a Healthy Maryland is pleased to announce that this year’s speaker for the Thomas E. Hunt\, Jr.\, MD History of Maryland Medicine will be Dean Paul Rothman\, MD\, Chief of the Medical Faculty at Johns Hopkins Medical System. In this centennial anniversary of Sir William’s death\, Dean Rothman’s lecture will discuss how Osler’s influence has spanned the century\, with original ideas from the late 1800’s coming full circle and being used in the practice of medicine today. DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Children’s Mental Health Matters Week\, Sheppard Pratt Health System and NAMI Metro Baltimore are teaming up to host a free screening of the film No Letting Go at The Conference Center at Sheppard Pratt. \nBased on the true story of the producer and co-screenwriter Randi Silverman\, No Letting Go takes an honest and compelling look into a family’s journey to understand and seek help for their son’s mental illness. The film shows us that with mental illness\, the impact on the child\, family\, school\, and community have significant consequences on each other when it’s not recognized\, understood\, or treated effectively. \nBreak-out discussions following the screening will be hosted by expert child and adolescent psychiatrists from Sheppard Pratt.
