DESCRIPTION:The Health Care Coalition Against Domestic Violence presents “Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Survivor Advocacy in the Medical Setting: Guidance on Providing Survivor-centered Care” a seminar built for​ domestic violence and sexual assault victim advocates in hospital-based response programs and advocates from community-based service providers who conduct interventions in hospitals and clinics. Register to examine common challenges faced in the medical setting and strategies to overcome each. Deb\, Lewis and Means \n  \nSpeaker Information: \nRonald Means\, MD: Dr. Ronald Means is a board-certified psychiatrist in the fields of General Psychiatry\, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. He completed training at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins hospitals and holds faculty appointments at both institutions. In addition\, he maintains a private practice focusing upon forensic psychiatric evaluations of both children and adults.  Dr. Means is the Chief Medical Officer for Catholic Charities of Baltimore. There\, he is responsible for both treating and monitoring the treatment of children and adults with mental health and substance use disorders.  He supervises a staff psychiatrists and nurse practitioners while developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure effective clinical care\, including crisis services for the youth of Baltimore City.  Dr. Ronald Means recently assisted in the creation of the Johns Hopkins University Behavioral Health Support Team – a mobile co-responder program that pairs behavioral health clinicians with specially-trained security personnel to serve the students\, faculty and staff of the university. \nCynthia Lewis\, MD: Dr. Major is an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include adult psychiatry\, affective disorders\, community psychiatry\, eating disorders and emergency psychiatry. Dr. Major also serves as the Director of Psychiatric Emergency Services at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Major earned her M.D. from Meharry Medical College School of Medicine. She completed her residency in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2000. \nArkaprava ‘Arka’ Deb\, MD\, MPH\, MPA: Arkaprava “Arka” Deb is a psychiatrist and preventive medicine physician.  His psychiatric clinical work focuses on adolescent and young adult psychiatry through his position as Director of Psychiatric Services with the Door Adolescent Health Center (New York\, NY).   His teaching and mentorship responsibilities include public psychiatry curriculum development and professional development for psychiatry residents through his position as Director of Public Psychiatry Education for SUNY Downstate College of Medicine (Brooklyn\, NY).   He also works on healthcare payment policy for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services\, US Department of Health and Human Services (Woodlawn\, MD).   He has completed his psychiatry and preventive medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (Baltimore\, MD).  He has been a Visiting Fellow at the Urban Institute’s Health Policy Center (Washington\, DC).   He has worked on Health Policy evaluations and projects at the Local\, State\, National\, and International level. \n  \n  \nLearning Objectives: \nAt the end of this educational activity\, the learner will be able to: \n• Recognize and describe the unique aspects to the provision of crisis care on campus settings \n• List resources Maryland psychiatrists can utilize during a mental health crisis (EPs\, ERPO\, MCT\, etc.) \n• Discuss legal options/interventions frequently used within the emergency department when treating psychiatric patients \n  \nAccreditation Information: \nThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of American Psychiatric Association (APA) and Maryland Psychiatric Society (MPS). The APA is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The APA designates this live activity for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Ayah received her BA in International Studies (International Peace and Conflict Resolution) and History from American University in 2009. She received a dual Masters in History and Library Science from the University of Maryland\, College Park in 2014. Her Masters’ thesis\, “Race\, Sexuality\, and the ‘Progressive Physician’: African American Doctors\, Eugenics\, and Public Health\, 1900-1940\,” examined the ways in which African American doctors and scientists interpreted and deployed eugenic thought within the context of racial uplift ideology. She was a Graduate Fellow in the Center for Medical Humanities and Social Medicine in 2017-2018\, and a Dissertation Fellow at the Consortium for the History of Science\, Technology\, and Medicine (CHSTM) in 2018-2019. Her work has been published in the Journal for the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences\, the Lancet\, Nursing Clio\, and Somatosphere\, and she has appeared on the Disability History Association podcast and American History TV on C-Span. \nKimberly Gordon-Achebe\, MD: Dr. Kim Gordon is a double board-certified adult\, child and adolescent psychiatrist \, Principal consultant & Founder of BHETC\, LLC (Bringing Health Equity Training to Communities) and Program Director for University of Maryland’s Child Psychiatry Fellowship Program . A talented educator and national leader\, Dr. Kim Gordon has dual appointments at Tulane University School of Medicine and University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is lead author of the Origins of Racism in American Medicine and Psychiatry In: Medlock et. al book\, Racism and Psychiatry: Contemporary Issues and Interventions. As an alum of the APA SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program she has used her specialized training in opioid maintenance treatment\, trauma informed care\, cultural competency\, structural competency and social determinants of health to address mental health disparities in BIPOC communities and became the first Tulane black psychiatrists to hold a position on the Board of Trustees of the American Psychiatric Association and also become Chair of the Minority Fellowship Program. Dr. Gordon is the immediate past President of the Caucus of Black Psychiatrist and Vice Chair for the Council on Children Adolescents and Their Families of the American Psychiatric Association and the past Southern Regional Rep. for the Black Psychiatrists of America\, Inc. She also was recently selected to be in the Women’s Wellness through Equity and Leadership WEL 2.0 Scholars Cohort funded by the Physicians Foundation. She has planned CME events and spoken at multiple conferences and academic sectors\, including Taraji P Henson’s Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation\, National Center for School Mental Health (NCSMH)\, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Annual Meeting\, Psych Sign\, American Psychiatric Association; IPS and Annual Meeting\, Black Psychiatrists of America\, Black Mental Health Alliance\, American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training (AADPRT) around mental health disparities for children and adolescents and historically marginalized communities aka BIPOC and has expanded her reach as a member for the governing body of AACAP/AACP CALOCUS\, to inform the public and payers on the need for practice models that rely on evidenced based approaches to addressing the level of care needs of psychiatric patients and their families.  \n  \nObjectives: \nAt the end of this educational activity\, the learner will be able to: \n\nConsider the historical and current impact of racism on psychiatric practice\nAnalyze the impact of racism on Maryland mental health sectors and how racism is embedded in mental health and social services by exploring the history behind Crownsville Hospital for the Negro Insane in Maryland\nAssess how racial and power dynamics within our field can affect the quality of the psychiatric services we provide\nIdentify anti-racist and anti-oppression strategies that psychiatrists in leadership roles (e.g. medical directors) can implement into service provision\nIncorporate the above concepts in providing patient care to diverse populations\n\n  \nAccreditation Information: \nThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of American Psychiatric Association (APA) and Maryland Psychiatric Society (MPS).   The APA is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  The APA designates this live activity for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. \n  \nThank you to The Maryland Foundation for Psychiatry for providing a grant for this educational activity.

SUMMARY:Free Recovery Month Webinar: Benzodiazepine and prescription stimulant use in youth — What’s the impact on SUD and its treatment?
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Maryland Addiction Consultation Service (MACS) and the Maryland Behavioral Health Integration in Pediatric Primary Care (BHIPP) for a webinar focused on Benzodiazepine and Prescription Stimulant Use in Youth. The session will feature a presentation by MACS consultant Marc Fishman\, MD\, addiction psychiatrist\, Medical Director of Maryland Treatment Centers\, and a member of the Psychiatry faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. \nTo combat the opioid use disorder (OUD) epidemic\, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has expanded access to medication for opioid disorder. As of January 2021\, there are fewer requirements for physicians to receive their waiver to prescribe buprenorphine to treat OUD. Following the session\, MACS staff will provide technical support to providers interested in applying for their waiver. \nFree CME/CPE/CEU credit available for participation!\n*Certificates will only be awarded to participants that attend for the entire duration and complete the post event evaluation form. \nLearning Objectives\nBy the end of the session\, participants will be able to:\n1.) Dr Fishman leads Maryland Treatment Centers\, a regional behavioral health care provider\, which includes Mountain Manor Treatment Centers in Baltimore and Emmitsburg as well as several other inpatient and outpatient programs. In that role he has been involved in development and implementation of innovative programming in addiction and co-occurring disorder treatment. His clinical specialties include treatment of drug-involved and dual-diagnosis youth\, opioid addiction in adolescents and adults\, and addiction with co-occurring psychiatric disorders. His research work has focused on medication treatment for SUDs as well as\, models of care and treatment outcomes in youth\, in particular opioid addiction. He has been a president of the MD Society of Addiction Medicine\, and is currently a member of its Board.
